What changes when signage goes up in Mumbai?
Three things. Any lit board on a business premises needs written BMC permission, while a non-lit board relating to the trade there does not. Name boards in Maharashtra carry Marathi first. And outdoor work has to survive a 44 m/s design wind, heavy monsoon rain from June to October and coastal corrosion. IBS plans all three into the job.
What is the building line?
In BMC’s 2025 advertisement guidelines, the building line is the plinth of the building. A board on a shop or office must not project beyond it, which rules out many projecting and hanging signs that would be routine in other cities.
What counts as an illuminated board?
Any glow sign, lit name board, backlit display, electronic or digital screen, or other advertisement with its own light. In Mumbai all of these need written permission from the ward office before they are displayed, even when they only name the business inside.
What is a structural stability report?
A certificate from a BMC-registered structural engineer that a sign structure is safe. BMC requires one for boards over 300 sq ft on business premises, and for every hoarding, renewed at each two-year licence renewal.

- Glow signs, illuminated name boards, backlit, electronic and digital displays on shops, showrooms and other business premises (clause 2.1(a))
- Displaying one without permission is an offence under sections 328 and 328A read with 471 of the BMC Act, 1888

Does a shop name board in Mumbai have to be in Marathi?
Yes. Section 36A of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, inserted in 2022, requires the name board in Marathi in Devanagari script. Other languages may be added, but the Marathi must come first and in a font no smaller than any other script. It applies to establishments with fewer than ten workers too.
How far can a sign project from a building in Mumbai?
Not beyond the building line. BMC’s 2025 guidelines say boards on business premises must not project beyond the plinth of the building. That rules out many projecting blade signs and deep canopies that would be ordinary elsewhere, so a Mumbai frontage design keeps signage within the building’s own face.

Are flex banners banned in Mumbai?
No, if they are thick enough. Maharashtra’s 2018 plastic notification bans plastic and thermocol for decoration but does not name banners. The binding rule is central: the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 ban plastic or PVC banners thinner than 100 micron from 1 July 2022. Standard flex is thicker than that; IBS specifies the gauge on the BOQ.
What wind load should Mumbai signage be designed for?
IS 875 (Part 3) sets a basic wind speed of 44 m/s for Mumbai, and BMC’s 2025 policy states that structures in the Mumbai region must withstand it. That drives frame sections, fixing sizes and anchor spacing on fascias, pylons and hoardings, which is why a sign designed for an inland city can be undersized here.
When is the best time to install outdoor signage in Mumbai?
Outside the monsoon where you can. IMD’s normal dates for Mumbai are onset on 11 June and withdrawal on 8 October. Lit outdoor signs can be installed during the monsoon, but electrical terminations and sealing need dry windows, so IBS schedules outdoor work around the forecast.
